What to do if a death occurs
If you or someone you know should experience a death, knowing the necessary steps to follow may assist in making the following procedures easier:
- In most cases, the attending physician or coroner will be required to pronounce the death. If the death occurs at home, the physician or coroner will advise the family when the deceased may be transferred to the funeral home. The same procedure applies if the death has occurred at a hospital, nursing home or other health care facility.
Immediately Contact:
- Close family members
- Doctor
- Funeral home
- In suspicious cases, call the police
- The Coroner may be contacted by a physician, the police or the funeral director. This may occur when someone who has not been under a physicians care dies suddenly, is killed in an accident, or when death is due to other than natural causes.
- Should a death occur out of town, province or country, please contact Schoening’s directly as we are experienced with the laws and regulations of other jurisdictions and can help to bring your loved one home.
